Japan’s Electronic Visa (Japan eVisa)

Japan’s Electronic Visa Program, known as the Japan eVisa, is a significant system that allows applicants to apply for visas online. It issues electronic visas for short-term stays, primarily for tourism purposes, in the Land of the Rising Sun. Let’s explore the key details about the Japan eVisa.

Eligibility for Japan’s Electronic Visa Program:

As of June 19, 2023, citizens and foreign residents of the following countries or regions are eligible to apply for a Japan eVisa: Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Important Points to Note:

Citizens from countries or regions that are exempt from Japan’s visa requirements do not need to apply through the Japan eVisa process. A list of these visa-exempt countries or regions can be found here: Short-term Visa Exemption.

Chinese citizens residing in China are required to apply for visas via travel agencies accredited by the Japanese Tourism Agency. These agencies will start using the Japan eVisa system for visa applications once the necessary preparation process is complete.

Entry method restrictions: JAPAN eVISA applies exclusively to travelers arriving in Japan by air.

Interview at a Japanese agency: Throughout the application process, applicants may be required to undergo an interview at a Japanese agency with jurisdiction in their place of residence.

US B-1 and B-2 visa categories: Applications are not accepted from holders of US B-1 and B-2 visas, including online submissions.

Validity and duration: A single-entry visa is only valid for three months. You must enter Japan during this period. Consequently, we will NOT accept any visa applications submitted more than three months before your departure date.

Deadline and Procedures for Applying for JAPAN eVISA:
Visa Duration:

JAPAN eVISA has a maximum validity of 90 days and permits a single entry into Japan. It is crucial to note that this deadline is of utmost importance, and you must enter Japan within the specified period mentioned on the visa.

Visa Application Procedures:

The application process for JAPAN eVISA involves similar paperwork procedures to those required for a regular visa. Please do not misconstrue the process assuming that filling out an application guarantees an immediate visa issuance, as is the case with TAIWAN eVISA. Typically, the visa application process takes time, and the results will be communicated within 5 working days.

Differences from Regular Visas:

Unlike traditional visas affixed to passports, JAPAN eVISA is not physically attached. Instead, it is stored electronically and linked to your personal information.

Visa Application Procedures Include:
  • Your Passport: Ensure your passport is valid throughout your intended stay in Japan.
  • Passport-sized Photograph: Provide a photograph adhering to the specifications of a passport-sized image.
  • Proof of Residence Status: Submit documents verifying your current residency status in the country (e.g., visa copy, green card, or citizen card).
  • Airline Booking Certificate: Include a certificate confirming your flight details, including the complete flight itinerary.
  • Financial Proof: Demonstrate your ability to finance the trip by submitting a recent bank account statement.
  • Detailed Itinerary for the Trip in Japan: Outline a comprehensive itinerary specifying dates, locations, planned activities, and contact information for your accommodation facility.
  • Documents Proving Your Current Address: Provide documents such as a driver’s license, state ID card, utility bill, or rental contract to establish your current address.

If Someone Else is Paying for Your Trip, Additional Documents Needed:

  • Proof of Relationship: Include documents (e.g., marriage certificate, birth certificate) establishing the relationship between the person sponsoring the expenses and the traveler.
  • Guarantor’s Passport: Submit the passport of the individual guaranteeing the financial support.

If You Purchase a Tour from a Travel Company:

  • Invitation Letter, include an invitation letter from the travel company.

For Applicants Under 18 Years Old: Parental Consent Form. If the applicant is below 18 years old, provide a parental consent form.
