Our Lady of Akita | Seitai Hoshikai Catholic Convent

Established in 1970, the Seitai Hoshikai Convent serves as the center for a dedicated community of women religious in the hills of Akita. The site is distinguished by its primary chapel, “The Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Chapel”, which was completed in 2002. This structure is a remarkable example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, constructed using “irimoya-zukuri” style architecture. It was built by master carpenters who utilized ancient temple-building techniques and Japanese cypress to create a space that bridges Catholic tradition with local aesthetic values.

The convent gained global recognition due to its association with “Our Lady of Akita”, a wooden statue carved from a single block of katsura wood by a local sculptor. The significance of the site lies in this interplay between localized artistry and universal faith, emphasizing a sense of place that is both culturally authentic and spiritually dignified. The surrounding grounds feature the “Garden of Mary”, a meticulously landscaped space designed for quiet reflection. This garden offers a serene vantage point overlooking the city of Akita.

Visiting during the autumn months is particularly impactful, as the changing foliage enhances the monastery’s disciplined and peaceful atmosphere.
