Remains of Santo Domingo Church

A sophisticated glimpse into Nagasaki’s “Rome of Japan” era awaits at the Santo Domingo Church ruins, where rare Christian history is elegantly preserved.

From the late 16th century to the early 17th century, Nagasaki flourished as a vibrant center of Christian culture, earning the distinguished title of the “Rome of Japan.” Among the monuments of this era, the Santo Domingo Church stood as a vital pillar of the faith, playing a significant historical role despite its brief existence.

Today, the site is meticulously preserved as the Nagasaki City Santo Domingo Church Site Museum. It offers a rare opportunity to view the authentic structural remains of a church from the period just before the prohibition of Christianity, a significant archaeological treasure that is exceptionally uncommon within Japan.
