Missionaries began visiting Sakitsu, then a refuge for hidden Christians, as early as 1880. In 1928, Father Halb became parish priest and later purchased the former village headman residence, transforming the site into the present church, completed in 1934 and designed and built by Yosuke Tetsukawa.
The front altar is believed to stand on the very spot where the “efumi” ritual once took place, offering a poignant reminder of the community long and complex journey of faith.
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
