Historical records show that between 1627 and 1631, Christians were subjected to brutal torture and executions in the scorching springs of Unzen in an attempt to force them to abandon their faith.
The first martyrs included sixteen individuals, among them Paulo Uchibori, a retainer of Arima Harunobu. They were later recognized among the 188 beatified martyrs, honored for their unwavering devotion.
