Egami Cathedral

Part of the World Heritage–listed Egami Village, this Important Cultural Property traces its beginnings to the baptism of migrant families in 1881.
The present church was completed in 1918 by a dedicated group of 40 to 50 parishioners, funded through earnings from seine fishing for silver stripe herring. Designed and built by Yosuke Tetsukawa, the church features cream colored exterior walls and light blue window frames that beautifully complement its simple wooden construction, now a rare architectural treasure.

Its bat wing shaped ceiling was crafted to enrich the resonance of hymns, while the painted pillar motifs and artful use of natural light showcase the refined aesthetic for which the church is highly regarded as a cultural asset.

The devotion of the parishioners is evident in the hand painted wood grain pillars and the delicate floral windowpanes, each a testament to their craftsmanship and faith.

Today, the church stands as one of the recognized components of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region,” registered in 2018.
