The first cathedral on this site was constructed in 1903, but after sustaining serious damage it was replaced by the present structure in 1977.

Here, as in many communities across the Goto Islands, Christians who had migrated from the Sotome district of the former Omura domain nurtured and strengthened their faith, creating a vibrant spiritual center that endures to this day.
