History

The Kobe Golf Club in Hyogo Prefecture is Japan’s oldest golf course. Established over a century ago by A.H. Groom, a British national, the course first opened in 1901 on Mt. Rokko with just four holes. By 1903, it expanded to nine holes, and in 1904, it became a full 18-hole course, stretching 3,576 yards.

Present Day

As of March 5, 2024, Japan boasts 2,196 golf courses across its 47 prefectures, with 2,178 currently in operation. This makes Japan the third-largest owner of golf courses globally, following the United States and the United Kingdom. Regionally, Hokkaido leads with around 220 courses, followed by Chiba Prefecture with approximately 180, and Hyogo Prefecture with over 150 courses.

Golf Course Characteristics

About 70% of Japan’s golf courses are built on hilly terrains, taking full advantage of the natural slopes of the mountains. These courses are known for their strategic layouts, incorporating the undulating landscape to create challenging shots, particularly on slopes. The complexity and natural beauty of these courses attract golfers from around the world, eager to test their skills.

Distinctive Features of Golf in Japan

Exceptional Course Conditions Japan’s courses are meticulously maintained, with management techniques tailored to the changing seasons and weather. Renowned for hosting Asia’s largest tournaments, Japan’s greens and fairways receive high praise globally. The superior course maintenance is a testament to the country’s commitment to quality.

Advanced Amenities Japanese golf courses are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including remote-controlled golf carts, GPS navigation systems, and luxurious baths. While there is a nationwide shortage of caddies, the availability of electromagnetic induction golf carts and modern GPS systems ensures a seamless experience for all golfers. The large communal baths, a unique feature of Japanese courses, are especially popular among foreign visitors, enhancing the overall experience.

Highly Rated Restaurants Culinary experiences are a highlight of golfing in Japan. According to the Japan Tourism Agency, about 70% of visitors cite Japanese cuisine as their primary reason for visiting. The tradition of enjoying high-quality meals between rounds of golf is a cherished aspect of the Japanese golfing experience, making it a delight for international players.

Japan’s Unique Golf Style Unlike the continuous 18-hole play common overseas, most Japanese courses feature a meal break after the first nine holes. Additionally, there are subtle differences in how clubhouse facilities are used, adding a distinct cultural flavor to golfing in Japan.

General conditions for renting a motorcycle in Japan:

Age Requirement: Drivers must be 20 years of age or older.
Licensing: You need a valid driver’s license. For foreigners, this means:
o A motorcycle driving license from Japan or an international driving permit (IDP) with a valid endorsement for motorcycles (“A” category) or an official Japanese translation of your home country’s license if it’s from a country not covered by the IDP agreements recognized in Japan.
o The IDP or translation must be based on the 1949 Geneva Convention for it to be valid in Japan. Countries like Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Monaco, Slovenia, Taiwan, or Estonia require an official Japanese translation of your license.
Passport for Foreigners: Foreigners are required to present their passport for identity verification.
Credit Card: A valid credit card in the name of the person renting the bike is necessary. This is standard for rental agreements globally to cover any damages or additional fees.
Other Considerations:
Although not explicitly mentioned for rental bikes, general cycling rules in Japan might influence your rental:
 – Helmet Use: While helmets are mandatory for cyclists under 13, and new laws might be pushing for mandatory helmet use for all cyclists, it’s wise to check the latest regulations or rental terms for specific requirements.
 – Traffic Rules: Cyclists are expected to follow traffic rules, which include riding on the left, using lights or reflectors at night, and not riding on sidewalks unless specified.
Cultural Note: Given Japan’s emphasis on safety and order, adhering to all provided instructions and local laws is not just a legal but also a cultural expectation.
